Is the iPad Screen Size the “Sweet Spot”? ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
When the iPad launched earlier this year, many naysayers expected the device to fail for several reasons – one of them was its screen size, as many predicted that a 10-inch screen was simply way too large and bulky to make a tablet easy to carry around.
Flash forward 8 months later: despite the wild success of the iPad, this perception is still rampant, as most iPad competitors seem to be fixated on building 7-inch tablets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in order to offer more handy and pocket-able tablets to the masses. In an attempt to answer the question “Which is the ideal screen size for a tablet?”, Techtree polled more than a thousand of users and offered them three choices: 5, 7 and 10-inch.
While the majority of the polled users chose 10-inch as their preferred size, a sizable 41 percent also indicated that a 7-inch screen would work for them as well. In other words, the 10-inch screen size seems to be the “sweet spot” when it comes to tablets, but a 7-inch screen size seems to attract many potential buyers as well.
When it comes to smaller sizes, such as 5-inch (e.g. the Dell Streak), it is clear that such devices simply fail to attract a decent amount of potential buyers, likely due to the fact that the devices are too close to a smartphone – for both size and functionality.
Despite the fact that Steve Jobs dismissed 7-inch tablets as ‘Dead on Arrival’ back in October, these results show that while the 10-inch market is currently king,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would be absurd for Apple to ignore the fact that a large minority of users is also interested in smaller form factors. Since rumors about a smaller iPad are still coming from all over the place, there is still a chance for us to eventually see a 7-inch iPad – after all, it wouldn’t be the first time the Apple CEO dismisses a concept that eventually becomes an Apple product anyway.
